The Department of Forestry began in 1929 and its first director was J.V. Hofmann who served until 1948. In 1951 T. Ewald Maki was appointed to head up the forest management curriculum. He served until 1970 when C.B. Davey was appointed department head. Davey led the department until 1978 when John W. Johnson succeeded him.
